Tesla’s CARB certification for the Model Y may have hinted at the all-electric SUV’s potential delivery date and range. The Model Y will be the latest addition in the EV automaker’s S3XY lineup. Tesla CEO Elon Musk predicted that there would be high demand for the Model Y due to the popularity of SUVs. 

The Model Y received its CARB certification on January 9, 2020, shared auto veteran Bozi Tatarevic on Twitter. Based on that information, Tesla bull Alter Viggo speculated that Model Y deliveries could happen as early as next month. According to Viggo, deliveries for Tesla’s Long-Range Model 3 RWD started 25 days after the all-electric sedan received its CARB certification on July 3, 2017. 

Besides the Model Y’s potential delivery date, the all-electric SUV’s CARB certification also recorded a possible range for the Performance AWD variant. According to the official document of the certificate, the Model Y Performance AWD’s UDDS range was 441.91 miles. Tatarevic observed that the UDDS range of the Model Y Performance AWD was more than the Model 3 Performance, which is 430.5 miles.

An even more significant range comparison, however, is the Model Y Performance’s listing on Tesla’s official website. The range listed for the top-tier all-electric SUV on Tesla’s site is 280 miles, which means the EV automaker may have found a way to make the Model Y even more energy efficient. The change in range hints that the variants below the Model Y Performance may have also received a range boost, which bodes well for customers interested in purchasing Tesla’s affordable SUV. 

Elon Musk has said multiple times in that past that he expects the Model Y to outsell the Models S, 3, and X combined. SUVs have become quite popular in the global car market, including China and Europe. Since the beginning of 2020, talk of the Model Y has escalated, and the EV automaker has started to shift its efforts from the Model 3 to its all-electric SUV.

During Gigafactory 3’s MIC Model 3 mass delivery event, Tesla China officially announced its Model Y program to the public. Gigafactory 3 is expected to produce the Model Y as soon as it gets go signal from the main Tesla office in the United States. 

In Brandenburg, Germany, Gigafactory 4 will start with Model Y production. Local Brandenburg officials and the Tesla board have already signed the purchase contract for the GF4 forest. Work on the 300-hectare land started before the purchase contract was even signed. Tesla is making rapid progress with Gigafactory 4 and could finish construction on its next factory as fast as it did with GF3 in Shanghai if the local government of Brandenburg continues to support its progress. If all goes as planned, Model Y production in GF4 could start as early as 2021.
