Tesla Autopilot Avoids Collision From Cop’s Unsafe Lane Changes
Cars are a dangerous form of transport, so Tesla strives to make its safest by developing and implementing Active safety features and Autopilot.

In the 4Q 2019, the company registered one accident for every 3.07 million miles driven in which drivers had Autopilot engaged. For those driving without Autopilot but with their active safety features, they registered one accident for every 2.10 million miles driven. For those driving without Autopilot and without Tesla's active safety features, the company registered one accident for every 1.64 million miles driven. By comparison, NHTSA’s data for the same period shows that in the US there is an automobile crash approximately every 480,000 miles.

Tesla's Autopilot has proven many times that it constantly saves lives. The Tesla Autopilot team is tirelessly working on improvements, aiming for Full Self-driving.

Brian Thompson / Twitter shared a video of how his Tesla Model 3 with activated Autopilot was able to avoid a collision with another car that violated the rules of the road. In the video, you can see that a police car unsafe changes lane, entering the lane where Tesla was moving.

The fact is that this situation is not unique, and each driver periodically encounters this. Unfortunately, such a collision can lead to very serious consequences, therefore it is very important that the Tesla Autopilot is able to recognize this threat and avoid it. If the car was driven by a human-pilot, then most likely he/she would not have been able to avoid a collision.

People are not perfect, they sometimes act unpredictably and imprudently, putting their own and other people's lives, and health at risk. A human-pilot is also imperfect, so sometimes he/she is simply not able to avoid some accidents. But a human has already done everything possible to be the best driver, while Autopilot, compared with human-pilot, becomes more reliable over time. That’s why Tesla’s cars are becoming safer, but Autopilot is saving lives now.
