Elon Musk announced that customers who purchased Enhanced Autopilot can now upgrade to Full Self-Driving (FSD) for US$3,00. Yesterday, Musk shared that Tesla’s basic Autopilot will be reduced to US$2,000 through in-app purchases. Both the FSD upgrade and basic Tesla Autopilot price reduction will last until July 1, which is only a few days away.

Enhanced Autopilot was available for purchase before Tesla had refined its Full Self-Driving suite, and basic Autopilot came standard in all the company’s vehicles. With Enhanced Autopilot, drivers received Adaptive Cruise Control, Autosteer, and more advanced features like Navigate on Autopilot. The price for Enhanced Autopilot ranged from US$5,000 to US$7,000. It depended on when the customer purchased Enhanced Autopilot before or after taking delivery of their Tesla vehicle.

Tesla launched Enhanced Autopilot around the same time it released its Full Self-Driving (FSD) suite. FSD was an upgrade to Enhanced Autopilot. It included all the features found in Enhanced Autopilot plus Stop Signs and Traffic Lights Recognition, Automatic City Street Driving, and Full Self-Driving. The cost to upgrade from Enhanced Autopilot to FSD before delivery was US$3,000, and after delivery, it was US$4,000.

On February 27, 2019, Tesla stopped offering Enhanced Autopilot and replaced it with basic Autopilot, which only includes Adaptive Cruise Control and Autosteer. Since basic Autopilot comes standard in all newly-minted Tesla vehicles, only customers who want to use the company’s Full Self-Driving suite will need to make additional payments. FSD costs US$7,000.

Elon Musk’s recent announcements about basic Autopilot and FSD upgrade’s drop in price suggest that Tesla could announce a change in pricing during or after TSLA’s Q2 2020 Earnings Call. Musk has stated in the past that FSD will only increase in price as Tesla releases more features. Since the beginning of 2020, the Autopilot team has released some of its best features yet, and all of them seem to be gearing up for a massive FSD improvement.

Musk did predict that feature-complete FSD could be available by the end of 2020. His FSD forecast may have been off in 2019, but the OTA software updates coming out this year indicate that Musk’s prediction could come true this time around.
