Tesla's battery factory in Giga Berlin will be one of the largest of its kind in Germany, suggested Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor and Energy Jörg Steinbach. “It will play at least in the CATL factory league,” he told Business Insider.
Steinbach, taking into account the facts known to date, said that the water consumption required for the production of battery cells would be acceptable for the Brandenburg region.
"The water consumption during the production of the battery cells, at least that is the impression today, will be acceptable for the Brandenburg region."
In addition, the politician also expressed his satisfaction that the automaker has largely ditched cobalt in its battery production and has designs to extend battery life. Tesla's batteries will also be 100% recyclable. Steinbach stressed that recycling will also make batteries more environmentally friendly.
Tesla is committed to producing batteries in-house so that it does not depend on third-party suppliers in the future. However, for the implementation of this plan, some patience is a virtue, as mass production will not start until 2022. During Battery Day, Tesla CEO Elon Musk once again confirmed that battery production will also be located in Giga Berlin. However, the company did not provide any details regarding the production of batteries in Germany.
In late September, a source told Reuters that Tesla would be able to move ahead with plans to produce battery cells and blocks at Giga Berlin. The Brandenburg Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Climate Protection is expected to formally approve the construction plans by year-end, following the submission of relevant applications.
