Tesla Giga Berlin has started recruiting for positions related to battery manufacturing. This is further evidence that Tesla continues to advance its goals of vertically integrating the major components of its vehicles and energy storage lineup. The battery, of course, is one of the company’s most critical components, and we are excited to see Tesla in Germany leading the charge.
During the Q2 2020 Earnings Call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the company's original plan remains in place and Giga Berlin will manufacture its own battery cells to match vehicle assembly volume. According to Tesla, the goal is to locally produce the batteries needed for the car factory. Particulars around implementation are currently being explored.
At the end of July, Tesla's representatives in Germany and the Minister of Economy, Labor and Energy of the state of Brandenburg, Jörg Steinbach, confirmed that Tesla will build a battery cell manufacturing plant for Giga Berlin in Grünheide.
“Tesla has started planning for battery cell production in Grünheide. The company told us about it,” said Steinbach. "This is great news again. Another step to make Brandenburg the leading energy transition country in Germany and Europe," he continued.
During the last two weeks, Tesla has opened recruitment for five positions related to battery manufacturing:
- Process Engineer, Cells;
- Manager Quality Cells;
- Equipment Development Engineer, Cell Manufacturing;
- Technical Program Manager, Cells;
- Cell Process Engineering Process Engineer, Cells.
The positions are based at Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg.
In the job descriptions, Tesla points out that the company's cell manufacturing engineering group is looking for highly-motivated professionals to accelerate their next-generation battery cell manufacturing program.
Process Engineer will be involved in the design, development and ramping of advanced electrode manufacturing processes, while working in a cross-functional team to test and validate product design changes.
Equipment Development Engineer will be involved in the design, development, commissioning and ramping of high-throughput equipment, while working in a cross-functional team to test, validate, and roll-out process and product design changes.
Cell Process Engineering Process Engineer will invent, develop, scale up and optimize battery manufacturing processes within a cross-functional engineering team responsible for the development lifecycle and launch into manufacturing. In this role, an employee will work closely with many organizations both internal and external to Tesla taking new battery designs from initial concept through into full production.
Technical Program Manager is a cross-functional role that requires coordination between many different groups within and outside of Tesla. an employee will drive the development and deployment of new manufacturing equipment and processes, as well as planning and execution of new cell manufacturing expansion within Europe. Technical Program Manager will drive projects from concept through install, integration, ramp, and handover to production. an employee will communicate and present project status, highlight schedule risk, and develop recovery plans in the event of a project slip.
Batteries are essential to Tesla's vehicles and storage systems. All positions will have the opportunity to contribute significantly to the company's products, both in Europe and around the world.
