Tesla Model S Plaid is a truly unique car, which has no equal on the market and probably won’t for some time. While it is a four-door electric vehicle capable of seating up to 7 people, the Model S Plaid also is the first production car ever to achieve 0-60mph in under 2 seconds and run a quarter-mile in just 9.247 seconds, which is a new world record.
In mid-May, Drive Tesla Canada reported that the Tesla Model S Plaid had set a new quarter-mile speed record for any production vehicle in the world. The record of 9.247 seconds with a trap speed of 152.16mph was set on May 11, 2021, at the Autoclub Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield. However, at that moment it was just an unconfirmed rumor.
For the time being, there is still no official data announced by Tesla, and it probably will not appear until June 10, when the delivery ceremony of the first Model S Plaid will be held. However, on May 11, the famous Jay Leno was spotted at the Autoclub Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield and reportedly testing the Model S. He joined Spike's Car Radio and shared some interesting details about the electric sports sedan.
Leno confirmed that he was at the Autoclub Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, as did an NHRA official, who recorded a new record quarter-mile time for the Model S Plaid of 9.247 seconds. “I’ll tell you what I did. I went up to Famoso Dragway in Bakersfield. And the Tesla Plaid...I drove by, and the NHRA guy was there to make it official. It turned a 9.247, at 152 MPH."
Such a result means that the Tesla Model S Plaid broke the record of the 9.4-second quarter-mile time set by the $3.3 million Bugatti Chiron Sport. Thus, a family electric car—the cost of which is 27 times less (!!!) than the Bugatti Chiron Sport—is the fastest production car in the world.
