Correction: Elon Musk tweeted that The Wall Street Journal's article is false. His tweet is added at the end of the article.

Elon Musk may be planning to build his own city in Texas, which will be located near Austin. This would be in line with his earlier statements that the capital area's housing market needs to expand.

Elon Musk plans to build his own city on a portion of thousands of acres of newly purchased pasture and farmland outside of the Texas capital, according to documents and other land records, and people familiar with the project, The Wall Street Journal reported. In meetings with landowners and real estate agents, Musk and employees of his companies described their vision as a kind of Texas utopia along the Colorado River, where employees of his companies could live and work.

According to discussions, it was about creating a city that could be attached to Bastrop County, about 35 miles from Austin, the sources said. As planned, the houses here should be inhabited by Tesla, the Boring Co., and SpaceX employees who continue to settle in the Austin area. Additionally, the cost of rent will be much lower than the market value.

The planned city sits next to Boring Co. and SpaceX facilities under construction. The site already includes a group of modular homes and leisure infrastructure. The inscription above the entrance reads: “welcome, Snailbrook, tx, est. 2021.” Snailbrook is a reference to the Boring Co. mascot.

The Wall Street Journal reported that, according to insiders and text messages, The Boring Co. CEO Steve Davis occasionally described even bigger plans, including the creation of an entire city. During a company meeting last year, he said they would have to hold a mayoral election. Under Texas law, a city must have at least 201 residents before it can apply to register and then get approval from a district judge. Bastrop County has not received applications from Musk or any of his organizations.
