SpaceX founder & Tesla CEO Elon Musk is worried about the world’s declining birth rate leading to a potential population collapse in the future. On Tuesday, January 18, Musk shared a set of articles that state women are not giving birth to enough children to replace the world’s aging population. The birth rate is now well below the death rate in most countries. As a result, scientists predict that the number of people on Earth will peak at 9.7 billion by the year 2064, at this rate population would fall to 8.8 billion by the end of the century. According to BBC data, the number of children under 5 years old will fall from 681 million in 2017 to 401 million by the year 2100 and the number of people over the age of 80 will soar from 141 million in 2017 to 866 million by 2100 (article linked below). As life expectancy increases the birth rate of new generations severely decreases, which could make it impossible to maintain a healthy population growth. In 2020, the Coronavirus outbreak accelerated this trend. Musk has warned on multiple occasions that humanity should try to reverse the downward birth rate trend to avoid underpopulation.

“We should be much more worried about population collapse,” Musk tweeted. “UN projections are utter nonsense. Just multiply last year’s births by life expectancy. Given downward trend in birth rate, that is best case unless reversed,” he stated. “If there aren’t enough people for Earth, then there definitely won’t be enough for Mars,” he added. More people are necessary to make life multiplanetary and ensure the human species long-term survival. Musk founded SpaceX with the intention to “preserve the light of consciousness” by expanding life to the stars (other worlds). He invests his time and wealth at SpaceX and Tesla to develop the technologies and spacecraft that will enable humans to create a more sustainable Earth and also expand life to Mars. Musk aims to build a fleet of at least 1,000 Starships and hopes that SpaceX transports around 1 million people to the Red Planet before the end of the 21st century. Expanding life to Mars could save humans from a future catastrophic event on Earth.

“I think one of the biggest risks to civilization is the low birth rate and the rapidly declining birthrate,” Musk said at the Wall Street Journal’s annual CEO Council in 2021. “[…] And yet, so many people, including smart people, think that there are too many people in the world and think that the population is growing out of control. It’s completely the opposite. Please look at the numbers – if people don’t have more children, civilization is going to crumble, mark my words,” he assured. Regarding a humans life expectancy, he believes that –“[…] It is important for us to die because most of the times, people don’t change their mind, they just die,” he said. “If they live forever, then we might become a very ossified society where new ideas cannot succeed.”
“Last year, Japan had ~800k births & life expectancy is 85 years (impressively high!), implying future population of only 68M, dropping almost half from current population of 126M. That’s a lot of ghost towns & cities,” Musk said in a follow-up Tweet on Tuesday.
