Tesla Giga Berlin is about to start mass production soon. The final approval process is in its final stages, the Brandenburg Environment Department said.
According to the state government of Brandenburg, the approval procedure for the first plant of the American manufacturer in Europe is entering its final phase. “We are actively involved in the actual final review of the approval decision,” said the head of the Environment Department Axel Steffen on Wednesday at the State Parliament's Environment Committee. However, the final date has not yet been announced, as some stages still have to be completed—for example, agreeing on a decision about the water supply. “But I cannot tell you today when the conclusion can be drawn,” Steffen added.
So far, Tesla is building the factory only with prior approvals, thus saving time. Tesla has submitted 19 applications, according to the Brandenburg Environment Ministry. Some requests are still being processed and await final approval, though should soon be granted.
Tesla had hoped production would begin before the end of 2021, but delays in the approval process due to activity by so-called “environmental” organizations have delayed this. According to the Department of the Environment, the American manufacturer submitted all missing documents for approval before Christmas. Brandenburg Prime Minister Dietmar Voidke asked for patience in order to obtain a legally reliable permit.
