Genex Power received 40 Tesla Megapack 2.0 batteries to form an energy storage system in Australia. They are already being installed to form the 50MW/100MWh Bouldercombe Battery Project in Queensland.

The Bouldercombe Battery Project (BBP), located in Rockhampton, will be one of the first off-grid, large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Queensland once commissioned, with an initial size of 50MW/100MWh. The project will be able to store energy for two hours. Genex has signed a connection agreement with Powerlink to enable the project to connect to the adjacent 275/132 kV Bouldercombe substation. The project will be connected to an accessible 132 kV bay at Bouldercombe substation which is located in a key part of the Queensland power grid with good grid capacity and marginal loss factor profiles.

Tesla was chosen for this project. The company provided Megapack 2.0 batteries and Autobidder software to maximize revenue. Genex Power said in a report that all 40 Megapack units have already been delivered to the site and installation has begun. Project operations are to start in the second half of the year with full commissioning by the end of 2023.

BBP will operate on an arbitrage/FCAS revenue model with the ability to bid into all eight existing FCAS markets, and to participate in future markets for inertia and fast frequency response, which are currently under development, said Genex Power.

“Importantly, the Agreement [with Tesla] delivers the ability to capture revenue from a fixed guaranteed amount to ensure that Genex participates in the revenue upside from significant pricing events,” the company added.
