Tesla Megapack to Power Canada's Largest Energy Storage Project at 250 MW / 1000 MWh

Tesla Megapack will power Canada's largest energy storage project. Oneida Energy’s 250 MW / 1000 MWh project will support Ontario's clean power grid and be able to meet the peak demand for 180,000 people.

The governments of Canada and Ontario are working together to create the largest battery storage project in the country. Oneida Energy's 250 megawatts (MW) storage project is being developed in collaboration with the Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation, Northland Power, NRStor, Aecon Group, and Tesla, according to the press release (via TeslaNorth.com). This project is the latest milestone in Canada's and Ontario's plans to build a reliable, affordable clean power grid that will help secure the future of Ontario's economy.

Ontario has commissioned the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to award a 20-year contract for the Oneida Energy Storage Project to support growth in the province's clean energy supply. The project will be powered by Tesla's new Megapack 2XL utility batteries, which the company manufactures at its Megafactory in Lathrop, California.

“We are thrilled to reach this milestone for the Oneida Energy Storage project and are grateful for the support of the Government of Ontario, as well as the contributions of many stakeholders that make this project a truly collaborative one. We are eager to continue moving this project forward, alongside our partners Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation, Northland Power, Aecon, and Tesla, and with the support of the Canada Infrastructure Bank and NRCan, as a sustainable, innovative solution that will benefit the environment, ratepayers, and our economy,” said Annette Verschuren, Chair & CEO, NRStor Inc.

The Oneida Energy storage project will keep Ontario’s clean electricity grid by drawing and storing electricity off-peak when power demand is low, and returning the power to the system at times of higher electricity demand. The project is due to begin operation in 2025 and will provide enough power to meet the peak demand of a city the size of Oshawa, which is about 180,000 people. This will more than double the amount of energy storage resources in Ontario's clean grid from about 225 MW today to about 475 MW when the project is completed in 2025.
