Tesla Model 3 became the best-selling car in Europe in December 2021, capturing an increasing share of the market. Model 3 led the model rankings while Model Y, which began deliveries to Europe not too long ago, also secured a place in the top 40.
The European car market continued to deteriorate in December 2021. According to industry analyst JATO Dynamics for 28 European markets, total sales fell 22% to 949,252 units. Tesla was one of the few brands to do better than last year and once again topped the list of best-selling vehicles.
Tesla registered 35,230 new vehicles in December, the company's highest monthly volume since arriving in Europe, according to JATO Dynamics. This provided a record market share of 3.71%, up from 2.23% in December 2020 and 1.93% in December 2019. Model 3 led the model rankings while Model Y, which began deliveries to Europe not too long ago, also secured a place in the top 40 in December. Sales of these two models alone allowed Tesla to outperform established brands such as Kia selling 12 models, Citroën selling 10, and Fiat selling 7. Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics commented: “Tesla has weathered the current crisis in Europe's automotive industry better than any other OEM.”
Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids hit a new monthly market share record of 29.3% in December. According to the analysis, the popularity of plug-in cars has been bolstered by greater availability at dealerships and continued government incentives for consumers in e-mobility. Electric vehicles accounted for a large share of all new registrations in several markets, including Norway (90%), the Netherlands (64%), Sweden (61%), and Denmark (57%).
According to JATO, the best-selling vehicle of all drive types in Europe in December was Tesla Model 3 with 27,358 new registrations. It is followed by Peugeot 208 in second place with 20,186 registrations, and in third place is Renault Clio with 18,397 registrations. These figures demonstrate that it is Tesla that is capturing the lion's share of consumer interest and driving the EV revolution.
