Tesla Model S and Model X have been added to the tax-exempt list for car purchases in China. The release of the information comes shortly after Model S Plaid—with a license plate shape for the Chinese market—was spotted in the country.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) recently published its updated “Catalogue of New Energy Vehicle Models Exempted from Vehicle Purchase Tax,” which includes the new Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles that have yet to be launched in the country. The company's two flagship vehicles will now be significantly more affordable than the original cost for the Chinese.

The list includes two Model S variants and two Model X variants. This indicates that the Long Range (LR) and Plaid variants could hit the Chinese market soon. The announcement of the addition of the two electric vehicles to China's tax-exempt vehicle list comes just a day after Model S Plaid was spotted at a Supercharger in Foshan, Guangdong, China.

However, the release did not include prices for the vehicles. This makes it impossible to obtain information on the tax exemption amount since it is a percentage of the purchase price. MIIT also announced that this purchase tax exemption will be extended through the end of 2023. Initially, it was supposed to expire at the end of 2022.
