Tesla Model Y and Model 3 became the best-selling EVs in Germany in 2022. By selling only two car models, the manufacturer captured a 14.9% share of the EV market.
In 2022, Tesla Model Y showed strength as production at Giga Berlin increased. As expected, the car became the best-selling electric vehicle in Germany, the home of Volkswagen. Model Y production has reached new heights this past year. Giga Shanghai continued to ramp up production to supply the domestic market, nearby countries, as well as Europe and Australia. Starting in the spring, Giga Berlin and Giga Texas also began to make important contributions to the production of the compact SUV. The more new factories worked, the more significant their contribution became, which was especially noticeable in Germany, where Tesla's first European factory is located.
Model Y started 2022 from a position of strength and has repeatedly been the best-selling electric vehicle in Germany. Confirming a huge success, the SUV became the best-selling car in Germany in September, beating absolutely all cars, including those with internal combustion engines. This was the first time in German history that sales of an electric car outsold those of any petrol model on the market.
Tesla Model Y was once again the best-selling EV in December, according to EU-EV data, helping to solidify the model's sales record in the country last year. Cumulative Model Y sales for the 12 months of the year were 35,426 units, an absolute record in Germany. Tesla Model 3 is also hugely popular in the country and narrowly falls behind with 33,841 units sold, ranking second in sales in 2022. Achieving this result is a very good signal, as it happened in Germany, the home of Volkswagen. Volkswagen has been in the lead for a long time, but has not yet been able to compete in the electric vehicle market. At the moment, sales data for all vehicles in the country are not available, so it is difficult to assess the position of Tesla vehicles in the overall auto market, but they are expected to compete with and outperform the gasoline dinosaurs.
At the end of the year, Fiat 500E ranked third with 29,635 sales. Volkswagen models lag behind by a wide margin. Volkswagen ID.3 registered 23,286 units and placed fourth. Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 had combined sales of 22,918 units, making them the fifth best-selling EVs in Germany in 2022.
