Tesla Model Y and Model 3 once again shone brightly in the global EV market, becoming the top-selling EV in March and Q1 2022. Model Y took a solid first place, with Model 3 right behind it.

According to José Pontes of CleanTechnica, March was a very productive month for the EV market. In those 31 days, global plug-in car registrations were up 60% compared to March 2021. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 75% of plug-in registrations in March.

The EV market in March was dominated by Tesla Model Y, which became the best-selling vehicle with 92,221 registrations. Right behind it, with 81,713 registrations, was Tesla Model 3. Clearly, the Texas-based manufacturer’s cars were extremely popular due to their superior performance compared to EVs on the market today. Despite the affordability, the popular Chinese car Wuling HongGuang Mini EV has remained far behind Tesla cars. With 47,563 registered units, the Chinese brand ranked third.

The registration data for Q1 2022 only confirm the superiority of Tesla. Model Y has the strong lead with 169,682 electric SUV registrations. Second place goes without a doubt to Model 3 with 127,936 registrations worldwide. Rounding out the Top-3 is the Wuling HongGuang Mini EV with 100,361 registrations.
