Tesla Model Y is on track to enter the top 5 best-selling cars in the world in 2022. The company expects the compact SUV to become the best-selling car in the world in 2023.

2022 has brought some unexpected nasty surprises that have had a significant impact on the automotive industry. The COVID-19 lockdown in China shut down many factories in the country for three weeks, and the reopening has been burdened by disrupted supply chains. Tesla was one of those affected, as its factory in China makes about half of all its cars, and most of the Model 3 and Model Y, the company's best-selling vehicles. Although the overall growth rate was affected, the Tesla models produced were still top sellers in some countries, outselling petrol competitors.

Model Y is by far Tesla's most popular car and CEO Elon Musk predicted it from the very beginning to become the best-selling car in the world. From vague dates, he moved on to more specific ones: Model Y will become the world's best-selling car by revenue this year and the best-selling car by number in 2023. At this point, with most of the year behind us, the data show that Musk's prediction could come true.

Tesla does not disclose the distribution of sales between Model 3 and Model Y, however data analysis provides some insight into this. BloombergNEF, which oversees sales data, estimates that the company delivered about 200,000 Model Ys in the third quarter, bringing the total to more than 500,000 this year. This means the crossover SUV as a whole is approaching the estimate published earlier in the year of 760,000. According to BloombergNEF analysis, this is enough to comfortably enter the top five best-selling cars in the world in 2022.

This means that Tesla Model Y in 2022 could already overtake the Ford F-150, which registered 562,000 last year. Whether Ford will be able to sell 200,000 more F-150s in 2022 remains unclear, however its chances of doing so are extremely low. Further down the leaderboard are Honda HR-V, Toyota Camry, and Nissan Sentra, which each topped 670,000 units last year. It remains unknown how much sales of each model will increase this year, but Model Y has a high enough chance to outsell all of the listed ones. This would mean that the electric car could end up being the fourth best-selling car in the world in 2022.

The top three in the world last year included Honda CR-V, Toyota Corolla and RAV4, with sales of about 1 million. This means that this year Model Y will not be able to beat them, but after the release of production at Giga Berlin and Giga Texas next year at full capacity, 2023 promises to be a very successful year for the model.
