Tesla is gearing up to launch a second shift at Giga Shanghai starting next week to ramp up production around the clock. Sources say the factory will remain in closed-loop operation until mid-June as the Shanghai authorities do not give relief.

Tesla is trying to start a second work shift at Giga Shanghai as early as next week so car production can resume around the clock, according to Bloomberg. It is expected that this will only be applied if the supply of auto parts becomes more stable. At the moment, due to a three-week shutdown of production, as well as only a partial recent start of work in all factories in Shanghai and some other areas, the supply chain has been disrupted.

Under strict regulations from the Shanghai government, factories could only resume production if employees were there 24/7. Working in a closed-loop cycle implies that employees work a shift, after which they spend their leisure time and sleep in the factory area. Meanwhile, employees must follow clear sanitary and hygienic rules and undergo regular tests for COVID-19. In this mode, Giga Shanghai can operate until mid-June, the sources said.

The company hoped that most workers would be able to ride the bus from home every day, but the idea was vetoed by local authorities. As of now, Tesla executives are in talks with Shanghai authorities to accommodate existing and planned shift workers who can be housed in temporary dormitories or vacant COVID isolation centers.
