The Lee County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) in Florida recently launched a Tesla pilot program. It aims to improve the agency's efficiency by incorporating electric vehicles into its fleet. The program deployed 20 Tesla Model Ys and Model 3s. LCSO deployed most of these vehicles to its civilian and community divisions, using one specifically for patrol and law enforcement capability assessments.

Sheriff Carmine Marceno has prioritized the creation of several charging stations throughout the county to support this new initiative, Motorblog reports. This move will ease the charging needs of electric vehicles and contribute to LCSO's sustainability efforts.

“We're going to be fiscally sound and smart with every single penny here,” the sheriff said when he announced the purchase of 20 Tesla cars.

The implementation of the Tesla pilot program is expected to result in significant savings for LCSO. The collected data showed that it is possible to achieve annual savings of about 50% or more per vehicle compared to ICE vehicles.

“They have the components inside that vehicle to do the best job they can,” the sheriff said. “Again, we never want to compromise service, and we will continue to deliver a higher level of service but also be more cost-effective.”

“Annually, we’re looking at a minimum of more than 50 percent savings,” Marceno said. “A techy vehicle that saves us money but yet again, I stress... delivers the highest level of service that’s the name of the game.”

Using Tesla electric vehicles will not only provide financial benefits but will also align with the county's commitment to sustainability. This will lead to a significant reduction in carbon emissions.
