CATL has officially started building a $440 million factory next to Tesla Giga Shanghai. The project with a total area of about 350,000 square meters will be completed and put into operation within a year.

On Saturday it became known that the construction of the plant of the Chinese battery giant CATL near Tesla Giga Shanghai officially began. This is expected to make it easier to supply batteries to the factory that produces electric vehicles for the world.

Shanghai's Lingang New District, home of Giga Shanghai, launched 14 projects on February 19, including CATL, according to a press release from the District Management Committee. The cost of the factory is estimated at RMB2.8 billion ($440 million) and its total area will be about 350,000 square meters, according to CnEVPost.

The project will build an environmentally friendly and efficient smart factory in Lingang New Area, based on the latest manufacturing technology and CATL's experience in building factories around the world to optimize the scheme of the new energy industry, the report said. According to the press release, CATL will promote technology development in advanced areas and will introduce a system in Shanghai that includes advanced materials, system structures, extreme manufacturing, and business model innovation, according to the release.

Although the press release did not specify a completion date for construction, Chinese media said the CATL project would be completed and put into operation within a year.

The project will focus on research and development of battery technology including low energy consumption, long-range power battery system architecture, and low-temperature environment to solve the problems of new energy vehicle users including mileage anxiety, said Qu Tao, CATL's chairman assistant. Although Tesla's name does not appear in the press release, all indications are that it will be primarily focused on the production and supply of batteries for Tesla.
