SpaceX Starlink Is Poised To Receive India's Satellite Internet Provider License In October

SpaceX's satellite-based internet provider, Starlink, is poised to receive a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) license from the India’s government sometime in October, as first-reported by Indian news outlet Financial ExpressThe imminent acquisition of the GMPCS license marks a pivotal step for Starlink, as it will grant the company eligibility for spectrum allocation, thereby enabling the initiation of its satellite broadband services across the country. Sources well-versed in the matter have confirmed that SpaceX Starlink has successfully met all regulatory prerequisites stipulated by Indian authorities. These prerequisites encompassed detailed information about satellite deployment, data transmission and storage, and the company's comprehensive strategy for delivering broadband services within India.

Upon the completion of these formalities, the Department of Space, in tandem with clearances from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Home Ministry, will issue the requisite approvals. It's noteworthy that Starlink had initially submitted its application for the GMPCS license in October 2022, almost a year ago. Simultaneously, the company sought approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), an indispensable step for providing internet services within India.

The GMPCS license, which is mandatory for delivering both voice and data services via satellite technology, is typically granted for a 20-year period. This affords companies the opportunity to provide satellite communication services within designated service areas in India.

As Starlink prepares to enter the Indian satellite internet arena, the industry is poised for increased competition, potentially resulting in improved connectivity and services for consumers across the country. This development marks a significant step forward in India's quest for enhanced digital access and internet connectivity in remote and underserved regions.
