SpaceX will provide Starlink Internet to 127 homes in the Muscowpetung Saulteaux First Nation indigenous reserve in Canada next year. “Muscowpetung's community is located in and along the Qu' Appelle Valley with 80% of the homes situated at its base -given this topography, Starlink was a great option other than fiber optics,” announced leaders on December 14th. Starlink is ideal because it is very easy to install and cost-effective compared to complex fiber-optic infrastructures which often require digging for miles to install cables. With Starlink, remote communities in valleys can easily access reliable internet by simply using a Starlink antenna to connect wirelessly to the satellite network.

“It has been the goal of the Nation's leadership to enable the on-reserve population the most advanced high-speed access to the internet. In previous years, community members have been granted free 1-year access to high-speed internet through Wood River Controls. There have been other options such as Xplornet and Sasktel, and Starlink provides an exciting and advanced fourth option,” they shared in a press release.

SpaceX’s Starlink satellite constellation of around 3,200 satellites in low orbit is capable of beaming internet data globally, even to the most remote places on Earth. “By connecting our entire community with Starlink, we will be providing our children greater access to resource sharing tools and other forms of higher learning Muscowpetung will therefore be the only Indigenous community in Saskatchewan where every residence is connected to such a powerful medium at such high-speed,” said Chief Melissa Tavita. 

"We are pleased to enter into this Service Order Agreement with Spacex to offer this service to our members living on the reserve. This is the first step in our nation's approach to broadening our infrastructure, therefore increasing the quality of life for our members. We know that this step will allow our young children and families an opportunity for a whole new experience in this digital age. It is our hope that we give rise to an entrepreneurial spirit,” stated Myke Agecoutay, President & CEO of Muscowpetung Saulteaux Business Developments, the organization in charge of acquiring the Starlink user terminals and installing them across the Canadian reserve.
