Tesla Applies for Telecom License in Canada to Provide Services for Its Vehicles

Tesla has applied for a telecommunications license in Canada. According to the filing, the company plans to provide machine-to-machine cellular data service for its vehicles.

Tesla continues its expansion in Canada, which should please the company's local customers. According to Mobile Syrup (via Drive Tesla), on September 15, Tesla filed for a Basic International Telecommunications Service (BITS) license with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). The approval will allow the company to become a telecommunications reseller service in Canada, which should have a positive impact on the company's current and future customers.

In the filing, Tesla made it clear that it would provide machine-to-machine cellular data service for in-vehicle infotainment access, internet access, and “mobile terminating SMS to wake up vehicles.” At the same time, the manufacturer explained that it will not own and operate transmission facilities in Canada.

“Tesla does not, and does not intend to, own or operate transmission facilities in Canada.”

Apparently, Tesla is looking to expand significantly in Canada, providing services to its customers in the country on par with its customers in the US. Although Canadians already have the widest access to what Tesla provides in the US, there are still areas where integration is not complete. In addition, the company is making a deeper presence in Canada with a manufacturing facility for battery equipment, and activity hints that it may be planning another one, though its purpose remains unknown.
