Tesla became the top-selling luxury vehicle brand in the US in 2022. The achievement was made possible by the growth of production capacity, which will continue in 2023.

Tesla is celebrating a new milestone in its growth: in 2022, the company became the top-selling luxury brand in the US, thanks to strong sales. Last year, Tesla came in second just 23,244 cars behind BMW, but the company could not sell more because its production capacity was limited to production at the Fremont factory, and Model S and Model X deliveries only started in the middle of the year.

However, in 2022 the situation has changed dramatically. In the spring, Tesla began production at a new factory, Giga Texas, and by the end of the year, its production capacity exceeded 3,000 units per week. In addition, production capacity has also been increased in Fremont, thanks to mind-blowing optimization of production equipment and processes. Tesla sold over 491,000 vehicles in the US in 2022, up over 56% from 2021, according to Automotive News Research & Data Center estimates (via Drive Tesla). This allowed the company to forge ahead to become the top-selling luxury brand in the US.

The closest competitor, BMW, with 332,388 sales, which used to dominate the US auto market, was relegated to second place, almost 159,000 units behind the winner. In third place, with 258,704 units sold, was Mercedes-Benz. Lexus was in fourth place with 258,704 sales. Rounding out the top 5 was Audi with a modest 186,875 units sold in the 12 months of last year.

Overall, sales in the US luxury car market fell 8% in 2022, however Tesla registered a 56% increase from a year earlier. This confirms the fact that the demand for the manufacturer's vehicles is very high, and the number of units sold is limited only by its production capabilities.
