Tesla has begun construction of a warehouse at Giga Berlin that will possibly be converted into a battery factory in the future. On the site where the warehouse will be located, heavy equipment was noticed, and the digging of a pit for the foundation began.
In late December 2020, Tesla filed a construction application with the Oder-Spree Construction Authority to build another large facility on an initial 300 hectares. The statement indicated that the premises would be temporarily used for other purposes. In mid-January, Tagesspiegel reported that it would later begin production of battery cells for Tesla in this building.
Construction observer Giga Berlin @tobilindh/Twitter captured the start of the construction of a new building. The footage from the video shows two excavators loading earth into dump trucks. A flight over the area showed that digging of the foundation pit had already begun. A pit was dug in the north and west of the designated area.

Tesla is currently piloting the production of new battery cells in Fremont. But the company plans to eventually relocate this production to Giga Berlin, where it will continue to scale up its new cell technology. Musk said that 100 GWh of annual cell production is possible for the German battery plant, but that is not the limit. “I can even imagine expanding to 200 to 250 GWh,” he said. "I'm pretty sure that that would make it the largest battery factory in the world."
While no applications have been received for the construction of a battery manufacturing plant at this point, it seems that preparations for this endeavor by Tesla at Giga Berlin have already begun. Since the company has indicated that the new building will be used as a warehouse temporarily, this also gives a hint. In addition, the size of the building indicates that it should be more than just a warehouse. The documents indicate that its area will be almost 22,000 square meters.
