Tesla Giga Shanghai is planning the production of the so-called “super long range” variant of the Model Y. Documents for the production of such an improved model have been submitted to the Chinese authorities.

Tesla is planning to release an improved version of its Model Y Long Range, according to new documents filed with Chinese authorities, The Driven reports. Documents released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of the Chinese government show that the company has registered five new options for Model Y, including Standard Range, Performance, Long Range, export option, and an improved Long Range option, even compared to the current Long Range.

According to the documents, the new variant will have a driving range of 640 km (398 miles) in line with the NEDC rating, which is still in use in China. This method of determining the range is already outdated and does not reflect the real range of vehicles. The most likely to be considered here is a real range of approximately 565 km (351 miles) using the U.S. EPA ratings and 584 km (363 miles) using the European WLTP cycle, The Driven noted.

Taking these numbers as a starting point, the new Model Y variant will be able to drive at least 25 miles more than its current Long Range version. Given that the range of electric vehicles is always the most important concern for owners, this increase in range is really important.

The documents submitted do not indicate the size of the battery. But it includes information that it will be a dual motor with a 137kW motor on the front axle and a 184kW motor on the rear axle. With this combination, a maximum 559Nm torque would be achievable.
