Tesla has begun construction of a new MegaFactory at Lathrop, which will focus on Megapack production. The new venture will create at least 1,000 jobs, with a likely increase to 2,000.
Tesla recently celebrated a new event: the groundbreaking ceremony of a new MegaFactory. The facility will be Tesla's seventh facility in San Joaquin County and will manufacture energy storage products called Megapacks.
"When you bring in manufacturing, technology follows," SJ County Supervisors Chairman Tom Patti said. "[Employees] are hands-on, working side-by-side with technology." Patti represents District 3, which includes Lathrop, Manteca and Stockton. He said that Tesla plans to start work on a plant with 1,000 people, and eventually increase the number of jobs to 2,000, according to Recordnet.com.
The new plant is under construction and the company plans to expand its distribution center in Lathrop. Located in a former J.C. Penney distribution center, Tesla plans to use the factory to produce Megapacks, which are currently made at the Reno Gigafactory. After the construction of the factory in Lathrop is completed, the Megapacks will be shipped to customers around the world.
The new factory is enabling workers who were considering moving to the Bay Area to work in high technology to find the opportunity closer to home, Patti said. At the moment, according to Tesla's website, the company is looking for specialists for the following positions:
- Technical Project Manager
- Sr. Data Engineer
- Quality Engineer
- Process Engineer
- Sr. Controls Engineer
- Sr. Manager, Production Control - Energy Manufacturing
- Instructional Designer
- Equipment Engineer
- Sr. Electrical Engineer
- Production Planner
- Production Controller
- Sr. Engineering Manager
- Controls Engineer
