Tesla has launched a new Ultra Red color exclusively for Model S and Model X. The new color looks deeper, hinting at the use of new paint technologies.

Tesla has introduced a new Ultra Red paint color for Model S and Model X vehicles. These vehicles are produced only at its Fremont factory. This is the first new color option for the flagship models in several years. The company previously offered Multi-Coat Red, which will now be replaced by Ultra Red. The cost of the new color is higher than the old one. Ultra Red is offered exclusively for the Model S and Model X, and Multi-Coat Red is still offered for Model 3 and Model Y.

The Ultra Red color option costs $3,000 in the US, $500 more than Multi-Coat Red. However, its cost differs depending on the country where the car is sold. The updated color is now offered in markets worldwide.

Ultra Red looks deeper and more layered. It seems that it significantly changes its saturation depending on the brightness of the lighting. Multi-Coat Red was quite bright and did not have a wide range of color shifts depending on the lighting. Ultra Red seems to be much more lively and playful. @SawyerMerritt/Twitter compared both colors and provided photos that show the differences well. In addition, he added a photo of Midnight Cherry Red, which is offered only for Model Y, manufactured at Giga Berlin. Judging by the photos, both colors are very similar, only Midnight Cherry Red has a darker shade than Ultra Red.

Tesla Model S and Model X paint colors currently on offer:

  • Pearl White Multi-Coat Standard
  • Solid Black: $1,500 option
  • Midnight Silver Metallic: $1,500 option
  • Deep Blue Metallic: $1,500 option
  • Ultra Red: $3,000 option
