New Tesla lobbyist registry documents show that it is in formal manufacturing talks with the federal government of Canada. The subject of discussion is “advanced manufacturing,” but its purpose is not specified.
Tesla is now officially lobbying the federal government of Canada to explore manufacturing options, namely, to speed up the timeframe for issuing permits in the country, reports Electric Economy Canada. New lobbying records released August 12 show Tesla has contacted the federal government four times in the past six months.
Most recently, Tesla contacted Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) minister François-Philippe Champagne in mid-August. Days before the lobbyists' latest record change, Champagne made a visit to the Tesla facility in Markham, Ontario.
Tesla's updated federal lobbying targets now read as follows:
“Seek government support to facilitate the engagement with provinces regarding permitting timelines, to increase the competitiveness of Canada and its ability to attract capital through approvals timeframes that are competitive with other manufacturing locations while working with government to identify incentives to further increase the attractiveness of Canada.”
Tesla has not indicated in any documents that it wants to manufacture at an “advanced manufacturing” facility (as described in Ontario’s lobbyist registry documents) in Canada. While everyone might expect it to be a car or battery factory, in fact, it could be any enterprise to support Tesla's development, which has already penetrated a wide range of different areas.
Among other things, the value of Canada lies in the fact that it is an environmentally friendly supplier of materials for the production of batteries. Last week, the country signed a Memorandums of Understanding between Mercedes, Volkswagen, and Canada to secure critical battery minerals. In response to a question about Tesla from Electric Economy Canada, Champagne replied: “We're engaging with Tesla as well.”
