Tesla Launches Shanghai R&D Center & Gigafactory Data Center in China

Tesla recently completed the construction of a building that will house the Shanghai R&D center and the Gigafactory Data Center in China. Today the company announced that the facility has been officially put into operation and the work of the teams has already begun there.

On October 25, the highly anticipated Tesla Shanghai R&D Center and Giga Shanghai Data Center were completed and operational. This means not only further development of the Tesla localization process in China but also new research and development. Building on this, Tesla will offer products and services that better meet the needs of Chinese consumers and bring new thinking and sustainable energy to the global development of the multinational company.

Tom Zhu, Vice President of Tesla China, said: “In accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy, Tesla is fulfilling its commitment to deepening in the Chinese market.“ “The localization process in China also provides the industry with a paradigm for educating localized talent, further accelerating the prosperity of China's intelligent vehicle R&D system,” he continued.

Preparing talent for China's emerging energy industry has always been an important part of Tesla's localization strategy. Tesla has now grown a talent pool across the entire industry chain, from cutting-edge operators to technologically advanced talent and management talent in the emerging energy industry. They are contributing not only to the development of Tesla but also to the development of China's new energy industry.

As Tesla's first overseas vehicle-based R&D center, it includes teams of software, hardware, electronics, materials, and energy development teams. The R&D center houses a total of 28 laboratories. At this stage, it focuses on developing Tesla's software, hardware, process and technology in China. It is also involved in application customization and standardized testing in the Chinese market and is involved in global AI machine learning.

The laboratories have already made an important contribution to the development of Tesla by creating new processes and technologies that will be applied at Giga Berlin and Giga Austin. In addition, local experts have made significant contributions to the manufacturer's ability to tackle the global chip shortage. In the future, Tesla Shanghai R&D center will also carry out more original development on complete vehicles, charging equipment, and energy products, gradually reaching the same scale as the U.S. R&D center.

With the rapid development of autonomous driving, the safety of intelligent vehicles is of particular importance. Data security has become one of the keys to the development of the industry related to national interests and the security of personal information. Tesla has met the government's relevant local data storage requirements and built the Giga Shanghai data center to store China's working data.
