The latest vehicle registration data released by the Hong Kong Transportation Department shows that Tesla registered 912 vehicles in August 2020, making it the most popular car brand in Hong Kong. At the same time, the Model 3 also became the best-selling passenger car in the region, surpassing both gasoline and electric cars from all other manufacturers—a supreme achievement.
August was strong for Tesla in China. The popularity of the company's cars continues to grow along with the expansion of production facilities. Tesla is well aware that China is a critical market for its global outlook, and sales of its electric vehicles there have a huge impact on overall performance. It makes sense, then, that the company intends to double the production of cars at Giga Shanghai. This increase in production capacity is possible due to the fact that Phase 2 is almost complete, and the production of Model Y is expected to soon begin.
China is the world's largest automotive market as well as the largest electric vehicle market, far ahead of the US and some European countries. And while local players are strong competitors, Tesla has a huge and well-deserved cult following in the country that continues to boost its sales.
