The Giga Shanghai-made Tesla Model Y and Model 3 are now available for purchase in Canada. Earlier, there was a rumor that the company was going to start shipping the Chinese-made cars to the country, and now it has been confirmed.

According to a change on Tesla's website on Tuesday, the company has officially made the Chinese-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles available for purchase in Canada. This confirms that Tesla has successfully completed the first rumored deliveries from its Shanghai factory to North America.

Available for order on the website were a rear-wheel drive Model Y and an all-wheel drive Model 3 Long Range. Both versions of the vehicles are available for immediate delivery to British Columbia. Their VINs confirm they were manufactured at Giga Shanghai. Both models are eligible for CAD$5,000 (US$3,700) federal benefits in Canada.

The production capacity of Giga Shanghai is great, so shipping from the Chinese factory is a smart move. Now, Giga Texas and the Fremont factory can focus on manufacturing and shipping to the US. In the US, both vehicles are eligible for potential tax credits of up to $7,500. This will certainly keep demand strong despite the challenging macroeconomic environment.

Earlier it became known that Tesla is focused on the development and testing of Model Y cars, designed specifically for export to North America. The plan sets a production target of around 9,000 units for export in the current quarter. Sources confirm that these Model Y cars are for the Canadian market only.
