Tesla Model Y became the best-selling electric car in Italy in September. The manufacturer continues to recover strength after slowing production in Q2 2022.
The car market in Italy continues to grow for the second month in a row. The ICE car market, unfortunately, continues to actively develop in September. At the same time, the share of plug-in hybrids has declined, while the share of battery-electric vehicles has continued to grow. Italians are still obsessed with polluting cars, with no electric vehicle in the top 10 best-selling cars in September. Although Italy's transition to electric vehicles is very slow, thousands of citizens still choose to use an electric car as their daily means of transportation. In September, 4.5% of all sales came from BEVs.
Tesla Model Y became the EV market leader with 968 units sold. In Q2, Tesla experienced an unplanned production shutdown at Giga Shanghai, which is its export hub. The COVID-19 lockdown closed the factory for three weeks, followed by a recovery period, but supplies to various countries continued to be weak. At the beginning of the third quarter, Tesla carried out a capacity upgrade at its Chinese factory, which also slowed production. However, after all the delays, the company continued to increase sales worldwide and for the first time in recent months achieved a strong result in Italy.
In second place on the list of best-selling EVs, well behind Model Y is Fiat 500E with 470 registrations. In third place is Smart Fortwo with 308 sales. Tesla Model 3 is also on the list, in fourth place with 238 units. Closing out the top 5 is Renault Twingo with 233 sales. The Tesla brand became the leader in September, taking a 23.7% share of the EV market.

The Tesla factory in Germany continues to increase production, which will help boost sales in Europe. Giga Berlin is expected to reach a production capacity of 5,000 Model Ys per week in late 2022/early 2023. This will help the manufacturer supply more vehicles to Italy and contribute to the further development of the EV market there.
