Tesla Model Y became the best-selling car in the UK in March. The Texas-based manufacturer has delivered a record number of Model Y vehicles to the country.
UK car sales rose to 287,825 in March 2023, reflecting an 18.2% increase from the same month last year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) data. The share of petrol vehicles is still the highest, although the share of battery electric vehicles continues to grow. The share of BEV in the UK car market in March amounted to 16.2%.
In March, Tesla Model Y shone in the country's market. 8,123 units were registered last month, earning it the top spot on the nation's best-selling car list regardless of powertrain. This was a record-breaking result, made possible by the excellent work of Giga Berlin. Following Tesla Model Y, Nissan Juke came in second with 7,532 units sold. In third place came Nissan Qashqai with 6,775 units. Fourth place went to Kia Sportage with 5,888 sales. Closing out the top 5 was Hyundai Tucson with 5,680 units.
Tesla's strong Model Y sales results in March helped boost the car's overall place in the Q1 2023 sales rankings. At the end of the quarter, Model Y was the fourth best-selling car in the UK with 9,953 vehicles sold. From first place, which is occupied by Nissan Qashqai with 11,073 units, Model Y is only 1,120 units behind. Thus, during the year, Model Y has every chance to strengthen sales and climb higher in the ranking of the best-selling cars in the UK in 2023.
