Tesla Model Y was the world's best-selling electric car in Q1 2023. Tesla Model 3 was in third place. With strong sales of just four pure electric car models, Tesla was the second best-selling electric car brand in the world, behind only BYD, which sells both BEVs and PHEVs.

Tesla has increased its car sales with the clear leader, Model Y. The company expects the car to become the world's best-selling car in 2023, and there is good reason for that. In Q1 2023, Model Y was the best-selling car in Europe, and in several other markets around the world. Although global sales data for all cars is not yet available, CleanTechnica obtained sales data for the electric car segment.

Tesla Model Y was the absolute and untouchable sales leader in the first quarter. From January to March (inclusive), 279,700 units were sold, an impressive result. In second place was BYD Song with 147,924 units, but its result includes sales of both BEV (battery electric vehicles) and PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) models. In third place is Tesla Model 3 with 132,470 BEV sales.

Selling only four electric car models, Tesla was the second best-selling EV brand in Q1 2023. With 422,873 sales, Tesla is second only to BYD, whose sales include both BEVs and PHEVs. BYD sold 523,987 vehicles, many of which actually pollute and damage the environment. Nevertheless, these PHEVs are still considered electric cars, although data show that many drivers do not charge their PHEV batteries and only use fuel to drive. In third place is BMW with 98,131 sales.
