The next-generation Tesla Roadster is in active development, Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen said in an interview. Thanks to the current delay in its production, the Roadster will be even better than planned, because new technologies have been created since its unveiling.

The next-generation Tesla Roadster was first unveiled in 2017 and has received the love of many hearts around the world. According to a recent study by Lease Fetcher that tried to find out which EVs were the most popular in 2021 and which ones everyone is looking forward to in the near future, Roadster has become the most anticipated electric car in the world. According to the results, Tesla Roadster is the most anticipated EV on Google by Global Search Volume. It was searched for a whopping 8,532,000 times worldwide in 2021, averaging 711,000 times per month. The car is the most anticipated EV in 56 different countries.

However, due to various circumstances, Roadster production has been delayed. In the face of a global components shortage, Tesla has focused on making more affordable car models to help spread EVs as quickly as possible, instead of trying to produce a limited number of expensive cars. It is worth bearing in mind that despite the circumstances, the company has not stopped working on Roadster and its improvements, according to Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen on Spike's Car Radio podcast, via @SawyerMerritt/Twitter.

Holzhausen also noted that the delay in production has a positive side for end users. He said that while the car was being developed, the Tesla team learned a lot and created new technologies that are ultimately much better. For example, the Plaid platform has yielded a lot of knowledge and experience, which will lead to the production of a car that is even better than the original Roadster 2.0 idea.

"We're working on the Roadster. I wish we were working faster, but I have to also say that in the time that we have been developing it, we have also been learning a lot, like Plaid is a great learning platform, that all those experiences will make its way back into a much better Roadster than had we launched right after when we debuted it."

In addition, Holzhausen confirmed that the Roadster will have a unique property for cars, namely the ability to fly. "It will be an amazing, exciting flying machine," he said.

In May 2021, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that the Roadster would be able to fly, albeit for a very short time. This option is expected to only be available on vehicles equipped with the SpaceX Package, which will also provide a 0-60 mph acceleration time in just 1.1 seconds! Musk warned that using this option "will be safe, but very intense. Probably not wise for those with a medical condition—same as a hardcore roller coaster."
