Tesla promoted Tom Zhu to the second most important role in the company. He assumes responsibility for the manufacturer's assembly plants in the US and sales operations in North America and Europe.
According to the latest information from Tesla employees, Tesla Global Vice President and General Manager for the Greater China Region Tom Zhu has been appointed to oversee Tesla assembly plants in the US and sales operations in North America and Europe. Zhu's position as Vice President for Greater China remains the same, and he will take on additional responsibilities. In fact, Zhu is now the second most important person after Elon Musk, and his direct responsibility is Tesla's automotive branch.
Rumors about Zhu's promotion appeared a few weeks ago. At that time, he went to the US, where he was directly involved in increasing production at Giga Texas. Within a couple of weeks of his stay there, the factory had reached a production capacity of 3,000 Model Ys per week. In order to fulfill the new responsibilities, Zhu left the role of Tesla's legal representative in China. On Sunday, Tesla employees received a notice that they would now report to Zhu.
Zhu is very dedicated to his work and the success of Giga Shanghai is credited to him. According to some stories, he became one of the first employees to sleep in the factory during the COVID-19 lockdown to keep Giga Shanghai operations going.
After the promotion, managers of all countries where Tesla operates will now report to Zhu. Previously, Tesla managers in China, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand reported to him. Now, this list will be supplemented (according to Forbes):
- Jason Shawhan, director of manufacturing at the Texas Gigafactory
- Hrushikesh Sagar, senior director of manufacturing from Tesla's Fremont factory
- Joe Ward, vice president of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa
- Troy Jones, vice president of North America sales and service
Information about who Giga Berlin will report to is unknown.
