Elon Musk was elected to the National Academy of Engineering for his breakthroughs in the development of reusable rockets and sustainable transportation and energy systems. Election to the NAE is one of the highest professional honors an engineer can receive.
On February 9, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) announced that it had elected 111 new members and 22 international members. This brings the total number of US members to 2,388 and the number of international members to 310. Elon Musk is one of the new members, for excellence in rocketry, transportation and energy.
“Musk, Elon Reeve, founder, chief executive officer, and chief engineer, SpaceX, Hawthorne, Calif. For breakthroughs in the design, engineering, manufacturing, and operation of reusable launch vehicles and sustainable transportation and energy systems,” NAE wrote.
Election to the National Academy of Engineering is one of the highest professional honors for an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature" and to "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education," explains NAE. The election of new NAE members is the culmination of a yearlong process. The ballot is set in December and the final vote for membership occurs during January. Individuals in the newly elected class will be formally inducted during the NAE's annual meeting on October 2, 2022.
Elon Musk is an outstanding personality, as he has achieved amazing success not in one area, but in several different industries. He is the founder and chief engineer/designer at SpaceX and is directly involved in the development of all of the company's products, including Starship. Starship/Super Heavy is a multifunctional, fully reusable two-stage super-heavy launch vehicle designed for economical delivery of cargo and people to low Earth, sun-synchronous, and geo transfer orbits, as well as interplanetary missions to the Moon and Mars. In addition, he is a co-founder and one of the main developers at Tesla, which designs and manufactures electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
