Tesla's presence and activity in Brandenburg puts the state at the forefront of economic growth in Germany in the first half of the year. The company has given Brandenburg a big boost.

Thanks to a successful deal, the economic situation for Brandenburg is actively changing. The state welcomed Tesla in 2019 and has benefited greatly from the company's activities since then. Thanks to the manufacturer, Brandenburg achieved the biggest economic growth in the country in the first half of the year.

Gross domestic product (GDP) in the east German state rose 6.0 percent from January to June, the government statistics office said on Friday. Experts in the field acknowledge that this growth was made possible thanks to car production in Brandenburg.

“Car production has given the economy a big boost,” statistics expert Benjamin Gampfer told Reuters. “This is the main reason why Brandenburg is so much above the national average.”

Hamburg achieved the second-highest GDP growth with 1.7 percent, ahead of Lower Saxony with 0.9 percent. In last place were Rhineland-Palatinate—due to weak industry—with a decline of 5.4 percent and Saxony-Anhalt with minus 3.2 percent. In the country as a whole, GDP decreased by 0.3 percent. Many experts expect a similar situation to occur throughout 2023 as a whole.

Although Brandenburg has various production facilities, including those that supply automakers, it is Tesla that has made the biggest contribution. The American manufacturer has a factory near Grünheide, where it produces about 5,000 cars per week. Giga Berlin provides more than 11,000 jobs and is the largest private employer in Brandenburg.

“Yes, Tesla has a role to play in Brandenburg,” Gampfer told Reuters. In 2022, gross value added in Brandenburg's manufacturing sector increased by more than 13 percent. The key driver of growth is industry investment in electromobility, emphasized Alexander Schirp, deputy managing director of the Berlin-Brandenburg Business Association (UVB).

“A core of growth is being created here that will bring momentum and new prosperity to the entire region,” he said.
