Tesla already is in the process of hiring several lawyers for its “hardcore” litigation department. At the end of May, Elon Musk announced that the company is building a litigation department fighting for justice.
On May 20, 2022, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company is building a hardcore litigation department that will directly initiate and execute lawsuits. He said the team would report directly to him. Musk is looking for real fighters who are ready to fight in the battles for justice in the courtroom. The head of the company made two commitments about how the department would work:
- The department will never seek victory in a just case against the company, even if it will probably win.
- The department will never surrender/settle an unjust case against the company, even if it will probably lose.
A month and a half later, the company is already in the process of hiring several lawyers, Musk said during his recent interview with Johnna Crider on the Getting Stoned podcast. The announcement was originally posted on Twitter.
“Tesla's just under a relentless attack from so many. So I think we just have to have like a strong litigation group that fights back, essentially. A lot of really talented lawyers have sort of sent in their resumes, and we're actually going through that. We're going to be hiring a bunch of people who responded to my tweet.”
Tesla has been the subject of many lawsuits in its nearly two decades of existence. The company actively resisted unfair accusations in court, defending its good name. However, now the manufacturer wants to go on the offensive and move from defense to attack. Apparently, Musk is “out for blood” and seeks to restore justice, which has been violated for years. “Looking for hardcore streetfighters, not white-shoe lawyers like Perkins or Cooley who thrive on corruption. There will be blood,” he wrote in May.
When Tesla faced a wave of unfair accusations in China in 2020, the company created a legal department. To date, most of the accusers have admitted that they lied about Tesla, some of them have been found guilty in a courtroom, and trials are ongoing in other cases. The manufacturer's aggressive self-defense has worked well, so it makes sense to repeat this strategy in the US, where the company and Musk himself are faced with a huge stream of lies often spread by the media. “We're under constant attack. It's insane,” Musk said.
