Tesla is locating a design center in Beijing, China's capital, as part of its further development. Products targeting Chinese consumers can greatly increase brand appeal in the local market.

Tesla has long intended to locate its own design and development center in China, where the company will create a car for the whole world. In January 2020, during the delivery ceremony of the first MIC Model 3s, which took place at Giga Shanghai, Elon Musk said:
“Something that would be super cool … so we’re going to do it … is to try to create a China design and engineering center to actually design an original car in China for worldwide consumption. I think this will be very exciting.”

According to Musk, some of the best works of art in the world have been created in China, so he believes that his project, created in China, will also be popular around the world. The car will have the same unexpected design as the recently introduced Cybertruck. The Chinese have always been distinguished by originality, speed and intelligence, which is why China is a great place to develop, create, and implement the most original and unexpected solutions.

On October 25, 2021, the highly anticipated Tesla Shanghai R&D Center and Giga Shanghai Data Center were completed and operational in one of the Giga Shanghai buildings. As Tesla's first overseas vehicle-based R&D center, it includes teams of software, hardware, electronics, materials, and energy development teams. The R&D center houses a total of 28 laboratories. At this stage, it focuses on developing Tesla's software, hardware, process and technology in China. It is also involved in application customization and standardized testing in the Chinese market and is involved in global AI machine learning.

Now The Wall Street Journal has reported that the list of key projects in the Beijing Municipal Government's report for this year, posted online on January 31, shows that Beijing is making progress in the construction of several important electric vehicle-related facilities. Among others, it states that a Tesla design center will be located in the city, though no further details have been given.

China is one of Tesla's key markets, especially given the Chinese government's greater openness to accepting electric vehicles. The manufacturer strives to localize production, design and more, so having products made by local designers, taking into account local interests, is a well-thought-out move.
