Tesla Model 3 and Model Y will soon join the Folsom Police Department, California for duty. The purchase of the cars was approved by the city council. The Tesla cars will be the first electric vehicles in the police department.

Folsom City Council approved the purchase of Tesla electric vehicles for the police fleet on August 22, Folsom Times reported (via Drive Tesla Canada). The city of Folsom has taken a step forward by helping its police department become greener. Approved for purchase by Tesla, the Model 3 and Model Y will be the department's first zero-emission electric vehicles. The total cost of Tesla vehicles will be $108,838.28. This is included in the department's $500,000 budget for police cars.

The cost of the Tesla cars is comparable to the cost of traditional Ford Explorers that the department uses. However, experience from other police departments has shown that electric vehicles are significantly more economical when it comes to maintenance and fuel. Tesla electric vehicles bring significant savings and pay for themselves in a few years of use.

Tesla is becoming the industry standard for many California law enforcement agencies, city officials say. The Folsom Police Department currently has several hybrid patrol units. However, Tesla vehicles will be the first addition of all electric vehicles to its fleet. One of the new vehicles will be used as a regular patrol car, the other will be used by a community service officer.
