Tesla Model Y became the best-selling premium SUV in China in 2022. With 315,314 sales in twelve months of the past year, Model Y ranked first among premium SUVs with a starting price of over RMB 300,000, according to a list released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Tesla's SUV sold more than twice as many as its two closest competitors combined.

Mercedes-Benz GLC came in second with 148,797 units, 166,518 units behind Model Y. Audi Q5 came in third with 145,778 units. In fourth place is BMW X3 with 140,991 units. Rounding out the top five is Li Auto Li One with 78,791 cars sold.

Tesla Model Y was also the best-selling premium SUV in China in December, with 29,387 sales, according to CPCA. In general, the car led throughout the year, which provided it with a victory at the end of the year with a huge advantage.

In terms of sales in the SUV segment at any price point, the Tesla Model was second only to BYD Song, which sold 478,811 vehicles last year. The cost of the Chinese SUV, at about $26,000, was attractive to local customers. However, Model Y did a great job considering it cost around $50,000 at the time, almost twice as much as BYD Song. In third place is the Haval H6, worth about $25,000, with 250,120 vehicles sold.
