Tesla welcomes Chris Winton as the new head of HR, who has received the title of “Champion of the People.” He is a former FedEx's top HR executive and worked for a company with around 350,000 employees.
Three weeks ago it became known that FedEx's top HR executive, Chris Winton, would step down from his role as corporate VP and chief people officer to take an outside position. At that time, it remained a mystery at which company he would get a job. Now, the Business Journals has reported that Winton has landed the top HR position at electric vehicle leader, Tesla.
“I am forever grateful to FedEx and its leadership for the amazing opportunities I was given during my career there,” Winton told MBJ in an email in November, before his move to Tesla was announced. “This role gives me a new opportunity to work with another world-class company in the top HR role.”
According to his LinkedIn profile, Winton is now a “Champion of the People” at Tesla and started working in December of this year. Along with the new position, his location also changed, from Memphis to Austin, Texas, where Tesla is headquartered.
Winton can bring to Tesla his many years of experience at a big company. He has worked at FedEx for over 20 years, starting as an intern in 1997. Since 2020, Winton has been the SVP of HR with FedEx Ground, where, in this role, he has introduced a new approach to attracting, developing, and retaining talent through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. In the spring of 2022, he took over as FedEx Corp. VP and chief people officer. It should be noted that as of May 31, 2022, FedEx had approximately 345,000 full-time employees, which is significantly more than Tesla has. As of December 31, 2021, Tesla had 99,290 full-time employees.
