Tesla delivered 76,663 Giga Shanghai-made vehicles to China in March, capturing over 20% of the BEV market. Exports were 12,206, 20.243% more than a year earlier when the factory was unstable due to COVID-19.

Tesla delivered a near-record-high number of Giga Shanghai vehicles in China in March. Tesla China exported 12,206 vehicles in March, according to data released Monday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). This is an increase of 20.243% compared to the same period last year, when the company exported only 60 vehicles from the factory. Last year, another outbreak of COVID-19 in China caused disruptions at Giga Shanghai. At that time, the delivery of cars it managed to produce was directed to the domestic market.

In March, Giga Shanghai delivered 88,869 Model 3s and Model Ys, including domestic sales and exports. Excluding 12,206 exported vehicles, this means that 76,663 vehicles were delivered to Chinese customers domestically.

According to CPCA figures released today, including exports, 27,202 Chinese-made Model 3s and 61,667 Model Ys were sold in March. Separate sales figures for both models in China are expected to be available in the coming days.

Retail sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China totaled 543,000 units in March, according to the CPCA. This is 21.9% more than a year earlier and 23.6% more than in February. Retail sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in China were 383,000 units in March, up 6.38% from a year earlier and up 30.04% from February.

Thus, Tesla's share of the NEV market in China in March was 14.12% compared to 7.73% in February. This is a significant increase. However, this usually happens in the last month of each quarter. If we talk only about the BEV market, then Tesla had a share of 20.02%, compared to 11.5% in February.
