By acquiring Grohmann Engineering, an engineering company and car supplier in 2016, Tesla has taken a strategic step forward. The manufacturer has built a new building in Prüm, where the company is likely to produce machines for the production of advanced motors for the Model S, X, and Roadster.

Tesla Automation GmbH (formerly Grohmann Engineering GmbH) is a German engineering automation company based in Prüm in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The product portfolio includes machinery for the production of microprocessors and memory chips, airbag sensors and power steering controllers, as well as systems for the production of car doors and roof seals, lithium-ion battery cells and modules. Among other things, the company manufactures robotics that are used in the battery and electronics production for Tesla.

In May 2021, it became known that Tesla Automation in Prüm began construction of a new building. The new construction is on the other side of the road from the existing building. The company has now completed construction, according to a new video from the site. @Humpidumpi2/Twitter visited Tesla Automation and shared a video showing great progress in construction.

At this point, the building already appears to be fully completed, although the progress of the interior work remains unknown. Given that the building is relatively small and Tesla has a good track record of rapid construction, it can be assumed that operations will soon begin there. It is noteworthy that on one of the sides of the building there is a parking lot for cars and a lot of chargers for electric vehicles.

There are currently about 70 job postings in Prüm on Tesla's website, most of them related to manufacturing. This confirms the fact that Tesla is preparing to expand production there. Among other things, Tesla Automation also manufactures the machines that make motors for Model S and Model X, as well as for the upcoming Roadster.

During the Model S Plaid delivery event, the company's CEO, Elon Musk, shared unique details about the new innovative motor. The new electric motor is the first of its kind to be in production and features carbon sleeve rotors. In order to get the carbon wrapped over the rotor, there are some very tough obstacles to overcome. Musk explained that carbon and copper have different rates of thermal expansion and in order to achieve the desired result, the rotor must be wrapped at an extremely high intensity, which is difficult to do.

In mid-June 2021, the head of the company shared some more details about it on Twitter. Musk said that the fiber is wound over the rotor at a high tension load, which previously could not be achieved on a large production scale. Tesla Automation, which is based in Germany, made a machine for this, he said. Thus, it is likely that the production of these machines on a larger scale will take place in the new building, as it is obvious that over time, the company will need many more of these machines.
