Tesla has launched the CCS retrofit for Model S and X, which is priced at $450. The company has announced that a retrofit for Model 3 and Y will be available later this year.

Last year, Tesla launched the CCS Combo 1 adapter to give car owners a wider range of charging options. At the time, the manufacturer also said that it would start retrofitting vehicles requiring upgrades in 2023. Now Tesla has started fulfilling its promise and opened up the possibility to place orders for the retrofit of the CCS Combo 1 adapter, according to Tesla North.

At the moment, the retrofit is only available for Model S or Model X vehicles. To find out if it is required for your vehicle, log into the Tesla App and check the information. If your vehicle needs a retrofit, you can schedule an appointment at the Service Center of your choice where the CCS Combo 1 adapter will be installed. The retrofit cost is $450.

Model 3 and Model Y owners will have to wait a little longer. According to Tesla's website, owners of these car models can check availability starting in mid-2023.

The CCS Combo 1 adapter allows Tesla owners to expand their charging options at third-party DC fast chargers. While this may not be necessary for some owners who live or work near Superchargers, others would be happy to be able to charge at all charging stations, some of which may be located closer to their frequented locations. Wider charging options are also essential for travel, giving owners more choices of itineraries.
