Tesla Model Y Becomes UK’s 2nd Best-Selling Car in September

Tesla Model Y continues to take over the automotive market and is on its way to becoming the best-selling car. In September 2022, the electric SUV became the 2nd best-selling car in the UK.

The new car market in the UK posted growth for the second month in a row in September, with registrations up 4.6%, according to the latest data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). During the month, 225,269 vehicles entered the country's roads. The share of petrol and diesel vehicles on the UK's roads continues to decline. Meanwhile, the share of BEVs increased by 16.5% compared to the same period last year and by 40.3% in the first nine months of 2022. Electric vehicle purchases continued to rise in September, albeit at a slower pace than at the beginning of the year. Also in September, the one-millionth electric car hit the UK roads, marking a major milestone in the transition to zero-emission mobility.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said,

“September has seen Britain’s millionth electric car reach the road – an important milestone in the shift to zero-emission mobility. Battery electric vehicles make up but a small fraction of cars on the road, so we need to ensure every lever is pulled to encourage motorists to make the shift if our green goals are to be met.”

Tesla Model Y has become the clear winner in the EV market, but that is not its only success. With 8,315 units sold, Model Y became the second best-selling car in the UK, behind only the Nissan Qashqai at 9,311 units.
