Tesla Model Y became the best-selling SUV in Australia in May, showing excellent performance. The electric SUV has dethroned longtime leader, Toyota RAV4. Also last month, Model Y became the third best-selling car in the country, regardless of powertrain type.

The latest figures from the Australian Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries showed that Tesla sold 3,178 Model Y units in May. This means it has dethroned the longtime leader, Toyota RAV4, with 2,616 units sold. This marked the second time Model Y had beaten the RAV4. The last time the electric crossover SUV outperformed its competitor was in September 2022.

The strong sales also show that Tesla Model Y became the third best-selling car in the country in May, regardless of powertrain type. In first place was Toyota Hi-Lux with 5,772 sales. In second place was Ford Ranger with 4,110 units. Tesla Model Y and Toyota RAV4 are in third and fourth places, respectively.

In May 2023, 105,694 new vehicles were sold, up 12% from the same month last year and up 2.7% from the previous record set in May 2017. The surge is the result of dealers fulfilling orders placed months ago, and in some cases years ago, rather than a surge in new deals.

Electric vehicles accounted for 7.7% of new vehicles sold last month and represent 7% of the total market since the start of the year. The data show that consumers are increasingly choosing electric vehicles.
