Tesla Model Y became the second best-selling car in Australia in June, beating out Ford Ranger. The electric SUV continues to lead the EV market, with the brand holding a 60% share in 2023.

According to the Federal Chamber of the Automotive Industry (FCAI) (via The Driven), Tesla Model Y became the second best-selling vehicle of any type of powertrain in Australia in June. It sold 5,560 units last month, putting it ahead of Ford Ranger with 5,334 sales. Model Y was second only to Toyota Hi-Lux with 6,142 units sold.

The top-selling models in June were:

1 Toyota Hi-Lux 6,142
2 Tesla Model Y 5,560
3 Ford Ranger 5,334
4 MG ZS 3,756
5 Toyota Rav4 2,858

According to the FCAI, 11,042 electric vehicles were sold in June. This corresponds to an 8.8% share of the car market and is a new record. Thanks to strong growth last month, 43,092 electric vehicles were sold in the first half of 2023. This corresponds to a 7.4% share of the automotive market. The share of all plug-in electric vehicles, including PHEV, was 16.6%.

“The early adopters of the new powertrain technology continue to push up the sales of electric vehicles across the country,” FCAI CEO Tony Weber said.

“The steady introduction of new battery electric models across all model segments at more competitive price points is critically important as we deal with the challenges of supplying electric vehicles that meet business and personal consumer needs at prices the mainstream buyers can afford,” Weber added.

Tesla again leads the EV market with 7,018 sales in June. It was another record month for the manufacturer in Australia. Tesla sold 57% more vehicles than in May, which was the company's previous highest sales month in 2023.

In the first six months of this year, Tesla sold 25,577 electric vehicles in Australia. This exceeds the company's total sales in the country for all of 2022. Tesla's share of the EV market is 60% in the first half of the year.

Top-selling electric vehicles were:

1 Tesla Model Y 5,560
2 BYD Atto 3 1,532
3 Tesla Model 3 1,458
4 MG ZS EV 387
5  Polestar 2 251
