SpaceX offers select customers ‘Starlink Global Roaming’ with inter-satellite ‘space lasers’ for $200 a month

SpaceX emailed select customers living outside the United States, offering “Starlink Global Roaming Service” for $200 USD per month. The company told potential customers –“You are invited to try Starlink Global Roaming service, which allows your Starlink to connect from almost anywhere on land in the world.”

“Global Roaming makes use of Starlink's inter-satellite links (aka [also known as] space lasers) to provide connectivity around the globe. As this is a new technology, you can expect Starlink's typical high-speed, low-latency service intermixed with brief periods of poor connectivity, or none at all. However this will improve dramatically over time,” wrote SpaceX in the email. The ‘space laser’ inter-satellite communication links feature is integrated on the newest Starlink satellites that operate in Low Earth Orbit. The feature is designed to provide faster data transfer from one satellite to the other without the need of each satellite communicating directly with a Starlink Gateway ground station on Earth. Light travels faster in the vacuum of space than through fiber-optic internet cables underground. The internet service will gradually become much faster as SpaceX launches more upgraded satellites equipped with space lasers.

The email was shared by multiple people who are on a waitlist to have access to Starlink in their country. “Participating in Global Roaming will not impact your place in line for Residential service,” the email states. The invitation to try out the service can only be used by the specific people who received the email. The Global Roaming service requires customers to purchase Starlink hardware for $599 USD, which includes the phased-array antenna and Wi-Fi router to wirelessly access the broadband satellite network. In the email, SpaceX also told users – “If you are not fully satisfied with Global Roaming, you can return for a full refund of the hardware within 30 days,” they wrote.
